Romford – 2
Southend and Benfleet – 7 (Sarah Conway 3, Ashlie Colman 2, Kirsty Edmunds 1, Nicola Bryant 1)
Southend and Benfleet 1s travelled to face Romford and found themselves 1-0 down in the first ten minutes after the hosts powered in a shot from a short corner. S&B weren’t perturbed and came back strong levelling quickly as Ashlie Coleman battled the keeper one-on-one and came out on top - the goalie went to the ground and Coleman flicked the ball, which bounced off the keepers heel and into the goal in spectacular fashion. Possession evened out as the game continued but hard work from Hayley Middleton and Deborah Etheridge kept Romford at bay whilst Captain Rachel Jeffery lead the charge up the left wing for S&B to launch their counter attacks. It wasn’t long before Caitlin Meredith received a long pass in the top right corner of the pitch; a quick pass back to Kirsty Edmunds saw Edmunds weaving into the D and bagging S&B's second goal of the game. Romford swapped players and positions so frequently it left S&B struggling to pick up stray players when Romford attacked but it was an amazing reverse stick flick that sent the ball flying into the back of the S&B goal, drawing the teams level again at half time.
Despite the level score at half time, S&B dominated the second half and the goals started to mount up as they were awarded a record breaking amount of short corners which S&B capitalised as Sarah Conway bagging not just one, but two goals from the set pieces; Coleman managed to claimed her second goal from another short after a clever slipped ball caught the Romford defence off guard and Nicola Bryant took the score to 6-2 after she snapped up the rebound as the goalie scrambled to clear the ball from in front of the goal. The few shorts that Romford had were expertly defended by S&B's first runner Nina Dabbs and goalie Lisa Hawkins, with Jodie Linge clearing up the rebound before Romford could retaliate. S&B never let up and as Romford heads dropped player of the match Conway managed to sneak through a final goal which gave her a hat-trick and took the score to 7-2 shortly before full time.
