Southend & Benfleet 1st XI - 3 (S. Conway 2, N. Bryant 1)
Maldon 1st XI - 1
Historically, Southend & Benfleet have struggled to win against Maldon and so they knew they faced a tough away fixture. Maldon got off to a phenomenal start but this seemed to bring out the best in Southend & Benfleet as they scored twice in the first 10 minutes! The first goal came from a cross from captain Kirsty Durban to Sarah Conway who fired the ball into the net. The second goal came from a penalty corner struck by Sarah Conway, which was saved by the Maldon goalkeeper. Nicola Bryant picked up the rebound and calmly flicked the ball over the keeper and into the net. Maldon capitalized as Southend & Benfleet were subbing players to get a goal back before half-time. In the second half Sarah Conway scored again within the first 10 minutes, sprinting up to get on the end of a ball from teammate Ashlie Colman. Maldon picked up the pace and Lisa Hawkins earned herself player of the match as she made a number of amazing saves from what looked to be certain goals. After Kendall Colman had to retire from the pitch injured, the defence of Jodie Linge, Nina Coleman, Rachel Jeffrey and Ellen Taylor united to keep the final score at 3-1 to Southend & Benfleet. They are now two points behind Upminster 2s but S&B have a game in hand.
