In their bid to get to the top of the Essex premier division, Southend & Benfleet 1st XI played away to Phoenix. Always a tough clash, Phoenix were eager to win some points. But Southend & Benfleet dominated the first half. Playing against a strong headwind, they had a number of shots on target from penalty corners and open play but the Phoenix goalkeeper was on point and saved every shot. In the second half Southend & Benfleet were still failing to get a longed-for goal and Nina Coleman, Jodie Linge and Rachel Jeffery had to work hard in defence against a number of Phoenix penalty corners. In the last 10 minutes it was looking like the S&B side would have to settle for a disappointing draw. However Sarah Conway saved the day with a strong strike from a penalty corner that went straight past the Phoenix goalkeeper. Buoyed by their goal, Southend & Benfleet continued to push forward with impressive play from Caitlin Meredith and Kendall Colman and cruised to the finish line with a 1-0 win.
