Southend and Benfleet 1’s travelled to Chelmsford in tropical conditions for the first game of the season. We started strong, with some lovely passing play and a high press meaning that we had plenty of attacking chances. Stepping up for us in goal, Mathilda had little to do, and anything that did come her way was swiftly dealt with by the defensive team. Rachel Jeffery, returning from injury and gaining Player of the Match, played brilliantly across the midfield, slotting into any position needed. At half time, the score was 0-0 and S&B felt that the game was theirs for the taking.
The second half started much the same, with hot, sweating and tired S&B almost fighting each other to sub off and have a drink in the horrendous conditions. The heat impacted the performance, with S&B struggling to keep the pressure on the ever rotating 14 players of Chelmsford. Eventually, Chelmsford caught S&B on the break, slotting the ball in to go 1-0 up. We continued to fight to get the equaliser, with Lily Cole and Hollie Wakeman coming extremely close to scoring themselves. Chelmsford closed out the game, scoring a short corner with a drag flick, ending the game 2-0. An incredibly tough game in such hot conditions, but S&B are positive going into the first home game of the season next week!
